Draft Legal carding

Purpose: 
All athletes wishing to race in a draft legal event must possess a "drafting card" prior to competing.  Presentation of a drafting card to race directors ensures that the athlete is capable of racing in a drafting situation without being a risk to themselves or the other participants.

Process:

  1. All athletes wishing to secure an Ontario Drafting Card must submit the application to the Triathlon Ontario office.  Only complete applications will be accepted.
  2. Triathlon Ontario will confirm that the athlete has met the requirements as set out for their category
  3. Triathlon Ontario staff will issue a laminated Drafting Card to the athlete
  4. A minimum of 30 days is required to process drafting cards

Term:
Drafting Cards will be valid for a period of 3 years, including the season it is issued eg.  a drafting card issued in 2011 will be valid for the 2011, 2012, 2013 seasons.  The athlete must reapply in 2014

Requirements:

New Cards
Athletes may not be younger than 14 years of age as of December 31 during the competition season to apply for a drafting card.
An athlete may be cleared to apply for a drafting card in one of two ways:

  1. by taking part in an approved drafting workshop or
  2. by being evaluated and cleared by an NCCP certified Level 2 (Comp. Intro) Cycling Coach

Applications for drafting cards will be:

  1. sent electronically to all Junior aged athletes (16-19) upon joining Triathlon Ontario.
  2. posted on the Triathlon Ontario website

Previously Carded Athletes

Previously carded athletes who have not re-applied since 2010 must re-apply for a new drafting card in 2012. 
The application will require a minimum of 3 draft legal events in the pa.  Any previously carded athlete who has not completed 3 draft legal events in this time period must:

  1. take part in an approved drafting workshop or
  2. be evaluated and cleared by an NCCP certified Level 2 (Comp Intro) Cycling Coach

Renewal:

Once carded athletes must submit a renewal form every 3 years.  In order to renew a drafting card the athlete must have completed 5 draft legal events in the previous 3 year period.
Failure to complete the minimum number of events will necessitate re-qualification.
