In spite of less than ideal conditions Ontario's triathletes made their presence known. Not only is Ontario the home of some real contenders but there is a lot of potential for the future.
Andrew Yorke from Caledon won the biggest race of his life placing first among 65 starters in the ITU Continental Cup race . Yorke is now off for 3 weeks to race in Europe for Triathlon Canada. "This is the best thing that has ever happened to me," said York following the race. "You name an injury and I have pretty much had it. I have trained so hard through all of these injuries, and that is the hardest thing to do mentally. I usually struggle in the run, but today at the five-kilometer mark, I just ran my guts out and didn¹t stop. I have never been so emotional at the end of a race."
The Junior men's race had its own drama with the athletes being led off course during the run. Kingston's Alexander Hinton and Victoria's Matt Sharpe crossed the line together in a photo finish where Hinton was ultimately declared 2nd "by a lean". Hinton's 2nd place finish was sufficient to secure him a spot on Canada's Junior Men's World Championship Team.
Joanna Brown from Carp put in a solid performance which resulted in a 3rd place finish in the first Junior Series race of the year.
Earlier in the rain Ontario triathletes contested the U15 Elite category. This new draft legal event provides a development opportunity for athletes 14 and 15 years of age who are moving toward a high performance stream. Ontario's inaugural U15 Elite race will be on July 31 in Ottawa.
Kanata's Samantha Klus won the women's U15 Elite event followed closely by Hamilton's Heather Summers. On the men's side Caledon's Myles Zagar, the early leader, overcame a bike crash to place a close second.
