Jones, Sturrock, Olsen-Keating and Lazenby Etch Names onto Youth Cup Trophy With Series Wins

– Participation up 25% in 14-15 Division –

September 16, 2015Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, announced the winners of the Triathlon Ontario Youth Cup Series after the completion of the final stop at Multisport Canada’s Lakeside event this past weekend.

Triathlon Ontario recognized the need to help foster a competitive development series in Ontario and in 2013 it created the Youth Cup with a 14-15 age group division. That year there were 20 youths that took part. Building on that early success, the Youth Cup was expanded to add a 12-13 age division and the 14-15 division expanded the number of races and made three of the five races draft legal. The Series had 40 participants in each division that year. The growth continued in 2015 with 50 participants (up 25%) in the 14-15 division with four of five races now draft legal, and 44 participants (up 7%) in the 12-13 division.

In addition to the Youth Cup, Triathlon Ontario created a Junior Cup Series (30 participants) and an Elite/U23 Cup Series (30 participants) in 2015, both all draft legal. Prior to 2015, there was only one draft legal race in Ontario for Juniors and Elites/U23 to participate in. The Cup Series has become an integral part of Triathlon Ontario’s Provincial Development Program, which aims to develop Youth, Juniors, U23 athletes, coaches and clubs. Triathlon Ontario will be announcing its 2015-2016 Provincial Team and the expansion of the Program’s training opportunities for Youth and non-Team Junior/U23 in the coming weeks.

Triathlon Ontario would like to thank the race directors that hosted the various Cup Series events, especially those that hosted draft legal events.
