History
The Ontario Games Program started in 1970 in Etobicoke as a showcase for amateur sport. They have now become Ontario’s largest multi-sport event, including both team and individual sports.
The Games take place every two years. Qualification takes place in the preceding year’s Triathlon Ontario Youth Cup (14-15). There is one final “Wild Card” race in the year of competition. Athletes must be either 15 or 16 years of age as of December 31st during the year of OSG competition to be eligible to qualify/compete.
The Ontario Summer Games is the first Games experience and an important part of the Triathlon Ontario provincial development pathway.
Objectives
The Ontario Summer Games encourage as many people as possible to play organized sports, help Ontario’s development level athletes pursue excellence, and promote increased tourism and economic development.
The Games are an ideal opportunity for Triathlon Ontario to provide a draft legal competitive race environment within the Province, preparing athletes for further development in draft legal racing and beyond.

Ontario Summer Games Format
- Individual Event Is Draft Legal
All athletes will need to be draft legal certified prior to the Games in order to compete. As per its Provincial Development Program, Triathlon Ontario believes by offering more opportunities and incentive for youth and juniors to race draft legal races, Ontario’s depth of high performance and elite athletes will increase and the pathway to future provincial, national and even international success will be more clear for athletes, parents, coaches and clubs. The event will be two heats of a Super Sprint distance with a short break in between. The times of each heat will be added to determine the winners.
- Mixed Team Relay Event
The Mixed Team Relay event returns, the only difference being the order of the athletes is now male/female/male/female. The format has gained in popularity on the National and International stage and is now an Olympic event. Triathlon Ontario believes in the credibility of the event and the Ontario Summer Games is a perfect venue to provide Ontario’s youth and juniors with this development opportunity. The format will be such that each team is made up of two females and two males. Each athlete will complete a Super Sprint distance swim/bike/run course before tagging the next teammate who will then in turn, complete the course and tag the next teammate and so on. The teams will be selected by Triathlon Ontario. The objective will be to create as even teams as possible for the relays.
