Monnink & Tomenson Take LC Provincial Titles While LC Series Wraps up in Dramatic Fashion

– 371 athletes took part in four-part Long Course Series –

??September 19, 2017Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, announced the winners of the Long Course Triathlon Provincial Championships and its Long Course Series. The Provincial Championships and Series finale were held on Sunday in Welland at host event REV3 Niagara Falls Barrelman.

Provincial Championships
Sunday morning three male Ontario pros put on a show as they battled it out for the Long Course Provincial title. Triathlon Ontario Long Course Development Team member Alex Vanderlinden came out of the water with just over a two minute gap on fellow Development Team member Jordan Monnink, followed by Daniel Clarke, an additional two minutes back.
A fast bike split by Clarke coupled with a crash by Vanderlinden resulted in the three young pros heading out of T2 within seconds of each other.

On the run, Monnink laid down the fastest run split of the day to take the title over second place Clarke and then Vanderlinden, in what was one of the most exciting LC races in Ontario this year.

The women’s title race was just as exciting. Sheila Treleaven drew first blood by putting down the fastest swim split on the day. Defending champ Miranda Tomensen answered the call by overtaking Treleaven on the bike and establishing about a two minute lead headed out of T2. Tomensen held off the hard charging Treleaven by just a mere 25 seconds at the finish to take the title once again.

?Long Course Provincial Series
The third edition of Triathlon Ontario’s Long Course Series saw another strong year of participation with 371 athletes earning points in the competition.

Age Group Women
Estrella Garcia put an exclamation point on Sunday by winning her age group and earning extra points at Provincials to go along with her earlier wins in the season. Garcia edged out Danica Metcalfe on the final day who was sitting in first but was idle.

Masters Women
Welland seems to agree with defending champ Jennifer Knowles as she used a first place at the beginning of the season in Welland and a first place finish at Barrelman, to successfully defend her Long Course Series title. Catharine Daly and Lia Kutzscher were ever so close, just taking second place by a mere seven points.

Age Group Men
In an unprecedented turn of events, defending champion Dany Malley will have to share his title with fellow long course warriors Mathieu Marilly and Ryan McCallum. The three all finished the competition with 731 points making it the first time the Series has had a three way tie for first place.

Masters Men
Current Cross Triathlon Provincial champ and defending LC Series champ Luke Ehgoetz left no doubt as to who reigned supreme on the Ontario Long Course Masters scene this year. Ehgoetz finished with a maximum 813 points and won his age group in all four LC Series events.

Congratulations to all of the winners and thank you to all those that participated and helped make the Series another great success.
