Youth Cup Moves to Most Unique Stop on the Circuit, Stittsville Grand Prix

– 3 OSG qualifying spots up for grabs –

?July 11, 2017Triathlon Ontario’s next stop in the five-race Youth Cup Series is this weekend’s Stittsville KOS. For the 14-15 age group, this is the most unique and possibly the most exciting, racing format on the Cup Series this year.
The 12-13 age group will race in a traditional youth triathlon format. The 14-15 age group, however, will race in three heats throughout the day, tallying points for finishing position in each heat. The one with the most points at the end of the day will win. The distance of the heats consist of a 200m swim, 6 km draft legal bike, 1 km run.

Three qualification spots for next year’s Ontario Summer Games will also be available for the top three male and female 14-15 year olds that have not previously qualified.

The grand prix format is fast and fun and helps develop speed, tactics and recovery. Both nationally and provincially, development programs are putting a greater emphasis on short and fast racing. The super sprint distance is usually the same distance as the relay distance and is becoming a growing importance in the high performance pathway in triathlon. For example, the relay is now an Olympic discipline and is a staple in the Commonwealth Games, super sprint/qualification heats were used in the 2017 National Championships, relays make up 3/5ths of the Canada Summer Games format and mixed relay became an official medal discipline in last year’s Ontario Summer Games.

Good luck to all!
