– Participation up 25% in 14-15 Division –

September 16, 2015Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, announced the winners of the Triathlon Ontario Youth Cup Series after the completion of the final stop at Multisport Canada’s Lakeside event this past weekend.

Triathlon Ontario recognized the need to help foster a competitive development series in Ontario and in 2013 it created the Youth Cup with a 14-15 age group division. That year there were 20 youths that took part. Building on that early success, the Youth Cup was expanded to add a 12-13 age division and the 14-15 division expanded the number of races and made three of the five races draft legal. The Series had 40 participants in each division that year. The growth continued in 2015 with 50 participants (up 25%) in the 14-15 division with four of five races now draft legal, and 44 participants (up 7%) in the 12-13 division.

In addition to the Youth Cup, Triathlon Ontario created a Junior Cup Series (30 participants) and an Elite/U23 Cup Series (30 participants) in 2015, both all draft legal. Prior to 2015, there was only one draft legal race in Ontario for Juniors and Elites/U23 to participate in. The Cup Series has become an integral part of Triathlon Ontario’s Provincial Development Program, which aims to develop Youth, Juniors, U23 athletes, coaches and clubs. Triathlon Ontario will be announcing its 2015-2016 Provincial Team and the expansion of the Program’s training opportunities for Youth and non-Team Junior/U23 in the coming weeks.

Triathlon Ontario would like to thank the race directors that hosted the various Cup Series events, especially those that hosted draft legal events.

12-13 Girls

Emma Lazenby rattled off three straight victories in the final three races to claim the maximum 75 points in the best three of four Series. Madison Walsh took second place in Lakeside but it wasn’t enough to overtake Isabella Mastroianni in the overall standings for second place. Mastroianni (4th in Lakeside) finished in second place with 60 points and Walsh was third with 59 points. Genevieve Sasseville (3rd in Lakeside) and Madeline Ongena tied with 56 points for 4th place to round out the top 5 in the Series.

12-13 Boys

James Olson-Keating left no doubt who should win this division by winning all four races to take his title. The podium was identical for the first three races with Ian Young and Hunter Scholey coming in second and third. Young’s three second places ensured his second place in the Series with 60 points and Scholey locked up third place with 58 points after a second placing in Lakeside. Cal Lewis (54 points) and Ian Markham (50 points) rounded out the top five in the Series. Newcomer to the Series, Jacob Chant took third place at Lakeside.

14-15 Girls

Haley Sturrock won three of the four races she competed in including Lakeside to edge out Emma Young (2nd at Lakeside) by seven points in the final standings. Sturrock finished with 97 points while Young ended with 90 points. Ella Kubas took third at Lakeside and in the final Series standings with 81 points. Tara Black and Ella Clarke each had 75 and 73 points to round out the top five final standings.

14-15 Boys

With this year’s Series win Tristen Jones becomes the first person to get his name on the Youth Cup trophy twice as he won last year’s 12-13 Division as well. Jones used three victories (including Lakeside) out of four races to score 95 points. Second place was a tight race in the Series, with Jack Chambers (5th in Lakeside) holding on with 86 points over Brayden Scholey (3rd in Lakeside) who amassed 83 points and Justin De Jong (4th in Lakeside) who earned 80 points. Liam O’Connor rounded out the top five in the Series with 72 points. Newcomer to the Series, Nicholas Lambert was second in Lakeside.

September 3, 2015 – Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, announced the results of this past weekend’s Club Championship held at Multisport Canada’s Wasaga Beach Triathlon Weekend.

Numbers were strong in Wasaga Beach despite numerous club members choosing to rack up valuable points at the province’s first full IRONMAN event, a significant part of Triathlon Ontario’s Long Course Series and a number of juniors competing in the Junior Cup Series finale at Dunrobin.  In total, 177 athletes scored points for their 25 clubs in attendance over the weekend.  After three to four years of terrible weather, an event move date earlier in the calender helped to ensure ideal racing conditions this year.  The new date, along with hosting the Club Championships helped the Wasaga event experience a 24% increase in participation from the previous year, according to Sportstats.

Division I
The LPC Triathlon Club (2,250 points) successfully defended its title as they held off the Toronto Triathlon Club (1,810 points) and Balance Point Triathlon Club (1,080 points) to take the Club Championship title.

Division I is made up of sanctioned clubs with 50 or more members aged 16 and over at the time of competition.

Division II
The Fighting Koalas of Waterdown lived up to their name as they took the Division II title with 960 points.  Mettle Multisport took second with 680 points and C3 from Caledon grabbed third place with 420 points.

Division II is made up of sanctioned clubs with 49 or less members aged 16 and over at the time of competition.

The winners of each Division will receive a first place prize of $500 plus have their names etched on the new Club Championship trophy currently being commissioned.  Second place clubs will receive $300 in prize money and third place clubs will receive $200.

– Partnering with OCA to share offices and resources –
velodrome

Milton Velodrome during the recent Pan Am Games with the infamous Rattlesnake switch back climb in the background.

August 17, 2015 Triathlon Ontario, the recognized Provincial Governing Body of Multisport in Ontario, announced today that it will be moving its head office from Toronto to the Milton Velodrome in mid-September.
In partnership with the Town of Milton and the Ontario Cycling Association (OCA), Triathlon Ontario will be subleasing office space from the OCA. A specific moving date has yet to be selected but it is anticipated that it will be in mid-September and while the office’s address and phone numbers will change, no disruption of services to its members is expected.

After the bankruptcy of the Sport Alliance Ontario in early April, providers of Triathlon Ontario’s current office lease and other critical operational services, the organization conducted a full financial and strategic review and selected various options for its future home. The Milton Velodrome offered a unique opportunity to be located in a world class cycling facility with another like-minded Provincial Governing Body. A number of financial and strategic synergies are expected to be realized resulting in Triathlon Ontario reducing administration expenses significantly, which means more membership funds being reinvested back into the development and growth of the sport across the province.

Milton is in the heart of the Oakville-Burlington-Milton-Guelph corridor which is home to one of the highest concentration of sanctioned races and sanctioned adult and youth clubs in the province. Milton also boasts a number of fantastic triathlon related facilities such as the Velodrome, Milton Sports Centre, Kelso Conservation Area, to name a few. It is also within a 30 minute drive of the National Training Centre in Guelph. In addition to the OCA, the Velodrome is home to the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, a high performance funding partner to both Triathlon Ontario and Triathlon Canada.

The purpose of the series of clinics is to help ensure that new participants to the sport have a positive first experience and those that are potentially interested in taking part, have a chance to see what our sport is all about.  Triathlon Ontario strongly believes that the best way to be introduced to Multisport is through a sanctioned club and coach.

The clinics will generally cover topics like what to expect during your first race, what its like to swim in open water with other people, how to get into your wetsuit, how to set up transition, course overviews etc.  Each clinic will differ slightly depending on venue and coach but all will help new athletes to overcome any nervousness or anxieties typically experienced when competing in an event for the first time.
